We have been assigned a new group project by our lectures, of which we were instructed to create a small section of a container city. We had a choice of choosing between a dystopian futures or a science fiction based theme for our level. My team, consisting of Carl James, Lewis Jones, Freddie Canton and I decided to go for a sci-fi inspired level.
We spent the first day of the project understanding what we were tasked to do, but most importantly we explored possible ideas that we could develop. We looked at what references the lecturers had given us in the blogs for inspiration for our ideas. We decided that instead of coming up with a random idea based on our own personal likes, we decide to each spend the day coming up with 3 ideas to present to the group the next day. The 3 ideas I came up with were between a retro sci fi home of tomorrow, a dystopian Brazilian favela or a future Tokyo gang run nightclub. I enjoyed working like this as we were truly able to explore a cool level design through rapid idea generation.
We discussed what we liked and didn’t like about our presented ideas and where eventually able to come decide upon modelling a retro-sci fi spaceship. The inspiration from the level had heavily influences from Ron Cobb’s designs for alien, 2001: Space odyssey, Prometheus, retro sci-fi and art deco propaganda posters.
In the level we have included
· Airlocks
· Dog legs
· Choke points
· And re-used pathways.
We are currently in the concepting phase of the project now, after white boxing and deciding upon the style/ colour of the level. Here are a few images of what I have got up to this week.
All in all life back at uni been has been nice. I am now back into my routine, but this time I’m giving myself some time to relax so not to overstress. I feel a lot better now that I am eating and sleeping well- as well as exercising and socialising- and a healthy is a happy Denzil.
