Hey Follks, over the past several week,s I have been completing zbrush studies in order to improve my my sculpting skills and of the human antomy , in order to fulfill my dream of becoming a character artist at Creative assembly. I had been speaking to Rich Carey, a character artist at Creative assembly and former graduate from Game Art Design, he could see my enthusiasm and passion and instructed me to complete daily zbrush studies. Each study took around 40 minutes to complete, here are a few sculpts of my progress Of course, you can see that I need to keep practicing, but with each study, I am getting more and more enthusiastic about zbrush sculpting. At the moment I am working on a full body study and could not feel any more enthusiastic about sculpting.

This week, begin with at a flying start, I woke up early and got into labs at 8am (a new personal best), which I will aim to keep constant as I feel as fresh as ever. I started the week with a brief plan of what I wanted to accomplish this week and how long it would take. This has helped me gratefully as I feel more focused, even more so than last week when I had no week plan. Following In my day, I went to Jeff’s life drawing seminar. As I had been going to his life drawing sessions I had seem his many works and yet he was still able to wow me with his incredible talents in life drawing. Jeff taught us about the how to make our sketches as well developed as possible through, form, contour line, depth and rendering. He mentioned how we as artists should negotiate with ourselves when drawing. Yet the most important lesson I took from Jeff was to work on top of old work and be consistent through repetition, or in Jeff’s words "people are in awe of a Matisse painting, but fail to see the 100 attempts Matisse made to get to the perfect version". I am currently continuing my development of levels and characters through, iteration and development. I visited local stores and took photographic reference to see if it could benefit the style of our project. Furthermore, I spent this week getting my head around Unreal engine 4 mechanics, especially to do with the character. I took it upon myself to create re spawn mechanics in our level, from where the character would fall into kill-zones. It had taken 1 week for Chelsie (The engine member) to create the re-spawn mechanic in the 3rd year side-scroller game. As I was not well hersed with engine blueprints, I had the funny feeling that it would be a great task, and it was. I had to make several iterations to my blueprints because it was not working correctly and took inspiration from the 3rd year side scroll-er game. However, after realizing the tutorial I had been following was not helpful and with the help of a fellow course mate (Dom) I was able to resolve the problem and get the re-spawn mechanic working. Throughout the trials and tribulations to get the re-spawn mechanics working, I have learnt quite a lot about Engine blueprints, how confusing they can be, but also how incredibly fascinating it is, connecting nodes and testing the results. It reminds me of science experiments back at school. Heather's Life drawing session was certainly contrary to the norm. This week, Heather had Joe (the life model) continuously move around the studio and it was our task to capture her movement through a series of quick gestural sketches. She expected them to be rushed as the model was only still briefly or otherwise in constant motion. I enjoyed this very much, because it prevented me from getting bogged down in detail, which has always been an issue for me. Furthermore, I was able to improve my ability to portray human gesture and ultimately I experimented outside my comfort zone by using carbothello pencils on mid tone paper. The session has boosted my confidence in my life drawing skills immensely and now I am starting to see my improvements. Can't wait for the next session. To conclude, it has been a bit of an up and down week however, I had completed all the goals I had set for myself and was able to gain in my art skills. Even though, it took a lot of failing and setbacks to finally start improving, I am over the moon that my path is looking bright. Similarly, Jeff's Thursday Life drawing session felt rewarding as well as I saw my improvements in my skill. I worked with the Carbothello pencil again, this time on white paper. This time round I noticed an increase in my focus when drawing the model. More to the point, when drawing I was negotiating with myself in the same way that Jeff would whenever he draws.
